The Conway Block Building Series
Building Block Series

The Conway Block Building Series is a collection of historical landmarks in and around Downtown Conway. Each building is hand crafted exclusively for Conway Main Street, USA with a written description of the building on the back.The buildings can be displayed on a bookshelf, over a doorway, on a fireplace mantel or on a table. They make wonderful gifts for all occasions and create a great way to own a piece of Downtown Conway.

Each of the wood building is approximately 7" x 5 " and is 3/4" thick. These pieces can be purchased at the Conway Main Street office located inside the Conway Chamber of Commerce on Main Street or at participating downtown merchant locations.

The cost for each building is $20.00. All proceeds will go to help fund Conway Main Street, USA and its efforts to continue to revitalize Downtown Conway.

Available Series Pieces:

Conway City Hall

First in the Series
1001 3rd Avenue
Built in 1824-1825. Designed by Robert Mills, designer of the Washington Monument. City Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places.


Horry County Courthouse

Second in the Series
1201 Third Avenue
Built in 1906-1908. The SC General Assembly authorized construction of the then $25,000 building. The original structure was the central portion with the main courtroom. In 1964, wings were added on each side.


Kingston Presbyterian Church

Third in the Series
800 Third Avenue
Established in 1734. The church building was built in 1858. In 1980, the church was placed in the American Presbyterian/Reformed Historical Sites Register.


The Main Street Theatre

Fourth in the Series
335 Main Street
Built in 1903 as the Kingston Hotel, it became the Holliday Theatre in 1947. Burned in 1990, the theatre became the property of The Theatre of the Republic in 1993 and renovations were completed in 1999. The Main Street Theatre is on the National Register of Historic Places.


Bible Hut

Fifth in the Series
First United Methodist Church - The Hut Bible Class founded in 1919. The building, dedicated October 21, 1898, occupies the site of the original 1844 sanctuary and was used as the second sanctuary for First United Methodist Church until 1910. The Hut was placed on the national Register of Historic Places and the Register of United Methodist Historic Sites.


Horry County Museum

Sixth in the Series
438 Main Street
Built in 1935 (WPA Project) as the Conway Post Office in the front lawn of the Beaty-Spivey House on Kingston Street. (Thomas Beaty was a signer of the Ordinance of Secession, and eventually a State Senator.) Used as the Conway Post Office until the 1980’s. The Museum opened to the public on March 1, 1981. The Wade Hampton Oak in front of the museum was the site of Gen. Wade Hampton’s address in Horry County in 1876.


The Waccamaw River Memorial Bridge

Seventh in the Series
"The Main Street Bridge" was dedicated on April 1, 1938. The lavish Gothic bridge, built by the SC Highway Department for $370,000, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge was dedicated as a memorial to Horry County citizens who served in America's wars from the American Revolution through the First World War.


Peanut Warehouse

Eighth in the Series
The "Peanut Warehouse" was built around 1900. The large trapezoid warehouse was built as a tobacco warehouse and was subsequently used as a fertilizer and peanut warehouse. This building reflects the business activity of the town in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.


First Baptist Church

Ninth in the Series
Flanked by historic old oaks, First Baptist Church of Conway stands today at 603 Elm Street on the site of what was once the old Muster Field in early township history. Established in 1866, the church obtained the land in 1876 and built a wooden building by 1878. The first brick church was begun in 1909, and the present sanctuary was complete and dedicated in 1951.


Burroughs School & McCown Auditorium

10th and 11th in the Series
801 Main Street
Burroughs School was established in 1877 by F.G. Burroughs, replacing the old Conwayboro Academy. Its first building stood on the present site of the Bryan House at 606 Main Street. Realizing the need for a larger building, this schoolhouse was erected in 1905. A bell tower originally crowned the building and was flanked by two large chimneys. An addition was added on the south side in 1915. Most recently, the building was used for Horry County offices. By 1922, an auditorium was needed for the Burroughs School and bonds were voted on. On Sept. 15, 1922, the local newspaper proclaimed, "It is being told that this auditorium, with one exception, is the finest thing of its kind in the state of S.C." It was officially dedicated on March 16, 1923, and the class of 1923 was the first to graduate in the auditorium. On April 9, 1988, a ceremony was held in the newly renovated building, and it was rededicated as McCown Auditorium. Buildings are $20 each if purchased separately or $35 if purchased as a set.


Conway Train Depot
171 Highway 905 Built in 1924 The first train arrived in Conway in December 1887. The original train station was located at the end of Main Street near the Waccamaw River. This gothic-revival-style train depot was built in 1924 for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. The Carolina Southern Railroad purchased the depot in February 1995 for use as their offices.


Quattlebaum Office (Conway Visitors Center)
903 Third Avenue Built Circa 1860 In 1860, this building was owned by Dr. Joseph Harrell and was located on Main Street. In 1876, it became the law office of Col. C.P. Quattlebaum, who became the first mayor of Conway in 1898. Around 1900, this building was moved to Third Avenue. The building housed the first and second banks in Horry County from 1891 until 1899.


C.P. Quattlebaum House
Anthony Pawley purchased this property in 1807. A map from 1816 shows this house in existance. Later, Alexander Murrell owned the home and operated the ferry across Kingston Lake. In 1887, Col. C.P. Quattlebaum purchased the property and soon renovated it to its present look. In 1898, Col. Quattlebaum became the first mayor of Conway.
